Startup spotlight: Maplewell Energy’s software for behind-the-meter systems

A participating company in the DISTRIBUTECH International Initiate program, Colorado-based Maplewell Energy will soon showcase its energy demand optimization and predictive control software at DISTRIBUTECH International, set for February 26-29, 2024 in Orlando, Florida.

Initiate is the major hub for startups to showcase their technologies to electric utilities at DISTRIBUTECH International. Startups can pitch their solution to a panel of industry experts, exhibit their company, and connect with other innovators from around the world. There is no better place for startup companies to connect with the energy industry and deploy their technology into the world of transmission & distribution!

“The firm’s technology allows utilities to deploy customer-facing energy storage solutions behind the meter and within community storage, while value stacking coincident peak reduction and distribution upgrade deferrals,” said Matthew Irvin, CEO, Maplewell Energy. “Maplewell’s solution helps solar developers, energy service companies, facility managers, and building owners reduce demand charges, unlock demand response revenue, and maximize self-consumption of PV solar.”

Maplewell’s JANiiT software platform is a demand-side, energy management system meant to unlock demand flexibility with AI, predictive control, optimization, and IoT devices to manage flexible loads and distributed energy resources (DERs). Enterprise customers include the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command, the U.S. Department of the Navy, and Parkland.

The software is meant to help optimize building systems like battery energy storage, solar power, HVAC systems, refrigeration, backup power, grid-connected microgrids, demand response systems, demand monitoring systems, and maintenance optimization.

JANiiT’s user interface allows users to configure predictive control based on operational needs with an event-driven interface, plan load day-ahead based on microclimate and historical demand, and program demand flexibility in existing infrastructure.

The predictive control features allow users to leverage DERs and flexible loads to shave peak, and improve energy consumption and resilience, Maplewell said. Optimization features include monitoring diagnostics and an edge maintenance dashboard with hardware diagnostics and alert faults.

Maplewell says it’s looking forward to the opportunity to reach distribution engineers and distribution system operators, an important customer prospect for the company, at DISTRIBUTECH International.
